Ok, I'm no Carrie Bradshaw, but I do wonder what it says about me that I go to the dentist and use the experience to write another blog post... Elephant Journal seems to be liking what I have to say these days... On Teeth and Meditation  I hope you do as well.

Well this is a different kind of blog post.   For a client, I recorded a guided visualization.   It's really a lovely one.  If you are interested, here is a link to the audio.

Feeling Gratitude is Good for You!

4/27/2015

A study just came out that feeling grateful can help heart patients heal.  I think that's a great finding.  I wonder what it means for keeping our hearts healthy generally.    The Institute of HeartMath (I'm a HeartMath mentor) says that feelings of appreciation and gratitude are good for our hearts.  In addition, there's research that feelings of gratitude are good for our brains.   I wonder what gets in the way of being grateful each day?   I have a ten day Sugar Challenge to improve your health and happiness, I think next I need to create a ten day Gratitude challenge.   Would you take it?  Can you list 5 things for which you are grateful in the comments below?   Try doing that each day for a week and see how you feel at the end of the week.  Let me know!

Don't lose sight of the Debate

The Food Babe

The Food Babe and her “Food Babe Way” have become a bit of a lightening rod for the movement for healthy foods or at least accurately labeled foods.  She has her supporters and detractors with her extreme supporters taking everything she says as gospel and her extreme detractors taking issue with blog posts that she has long since repudiated and taken down.

Amidst the clamor, there are also some good, thoughtful articles about what she says and this is what I think is most important – to drive this critical discussion, arguably, our lives depend up on it.     There are problems with many processed foods in this country, we do allow foods and chemicals in our systems that are banned in Europe, and the GM debate (as well as the associated debate about the known and proven dangers of RoundUp) are important discussions.   There is so much that we do not know when it comes to nutrition, just yesterday I read an article about what actually qualifies as too much salt, we still don’t know after years, if not decades, of study.

The thing is, we need to have the conversation. We need to be aware of what we are putting into and on our bodies, and I believe we have the right to know what the ingredients are in these products.

Arguing over blog posts that are years old is pointless.   There are many scientists who did work in the past that they have since repudiated or qualified.   At the same time, painting all chemicals as evil toxins is probably not the way to go either.  There is a middle ground and there is an important discussion to be had.  Let’s not lose the focus among the vitriol and passion.

In case you missed this, I thought it was a beautifully written, well reasoned piece by Angelina Jolie.

What do you think?   Do you know what choice you would make?

March 16 - Freedom of Information Day

3/16/2015

Today is Freedom of Information Day.  It's a serious issue from a government perspective, but today I'm thinking about it in terms of interpersonal interactions.   Ever since I first listened to Brene Brown's Ted Talk, I find that it comes up in conversation all the time. In particular, I find her perspective on being appropriately vulnerable to be really interesting.   While I'm on the subject, I also love the idea of asking yourself: "is it true? is it necessary? is it kind?" before saying something.

I'm not sure how either of these would impact freedom of information requests, but I have no doubt that it would improve communication in government!  What do you think? Happy viewing

March 4 - A Day to Remember Poppa

3/4/2015

Today is the anniversary of my grandfather's death.   I was incredibly lucky to grow up with all four grandparents living nearby.   My grandfather, as the father of two sons, was probably completely bewildered by my two sisters and me, but he loved us without condition.   I remember as a little girl him dancing with me by having me step on his feet and I remember how he used to pretend that he couldn't clap -- a routine that kept us amused for hours.  I also remember the incredibly loving kindness he showed my grandmother as she declined and was no longer present even when she was there.  I am now almost the age my grandfather was when I was born, which is not relevant but is astonishing, and I am beginning to see friends find great joy in grandparenthood.

Thinking about my grandparents makes me think about many things health, elder care in this country, food safety now as compared to when they were growing up, choices, community -- all sorts of things.  But, for now, I am just going to take a moment for gratitude and appreciation for Poppa, my other grandparents, and my parents and all of that they did to enable me to live this wonderful, amazing life.   I invite you, on this cold March day, to take a moment, focus on the area around your heart and breathe love and appreciation in and out through your heart for that which you are most grateful.

In  love and gratitude,

Wendy
