Today is the anniversary of my grandfather's death. I was incredibly lucky to grow up with all four grandparents living nearby. My grandfather, as the father of two sons, was probably completely bewildered by my two sisters and me, but he loved us without condition. I remember as a little girl him dancing with me by having me step on his feet and I remember how he used to pretend that he couldn't clap -- a routine that kept us amused for hours. I also remember the incredibly loving kindness he showed my grandmother as she declined and was no longer present even when she was there. I am now almost the age my grandfather was when I was born, which is not relevant but is astonishing, and I am beginning to see friends find great joy in grandparenthood.
Thinking about my grandparents makes me think about many things health, elder care in this country, food safety now as compared to when they were growing up, choices, community -- all sorts of things. But, for now, I am just going to take a moment for gratitude and appreciation for Poppa, my other grandparents, and my parents and all of that they did to enable me to live this wonderful, amazing life. I invite you, on this cold March day, to take a moment, focus on the area around your heart and breathe love and appreciation in and out through your heart for that which you are most grateful.
In love and gratitude,
Wendy
